I’m an orphaned NoteBook ( Circus Ponies ) user. That company went out of business suddenly without any explanation. While the software still works on my iMac ( OS X only application ), I looked around for a substitute. Since I used NoteBook for its note taking feature ( what they called Writing Pages ), Evernote seemed like a good replacement. I checked the reviews and they agreed. I’ve transferred about a couple of hundreds of notes already by cutting and pasting or dragging and dropping content. It was a little time consuming, but this wasn’t unexpected or difficult. There are many things to like about Evernote: ease of use, lightning fast searches of notes, the nice formatting, the ability to drop in PDF’s which can then be scrolled through within the note, the ability to create notes on my iMac, or my PC within their app or in a browser and seeing the note appear on all devices, sending email messages into a notebook, etc. What I found lacking so far is the inability to encrypt individual notes and to password protect notebooks. It’s not sufficient to encrypt some highlighted text. I’d like to be able to password protect Notebooks as a minimal security feature. I’d like to encrypt sensitive ( e.g. financial, medical ) information which may include text, documents, screen shots, etc. I’d be happy to have this feature even if I could only access such notes from within their app. This is a pretty big deal for me and I’m surprised that Evernote lacks such a basic, important feature. Otherwise I’m liking this application so far.
